Penang Hill: Catching Bus 204, Funicular Views & Mountain Tranquility
Stepping away from Komtar around 3 PM for a breezy afternoon escape up Bukit Bendera — featuring cool mountain air, telescope panoramas, a tranquil hilltop mosque, and live street art.
Heading Out from Penang Times Square & Komtar
After spending a casual afternoon rolling around near the upper levels of Komtar, we decided it was time to swap the city concrete for cooler heights. At around 3:00 PM, we made our way over to Penang Times Square to catch public transport up to the island’s famous peak.
Taking the bus is one of the easiest local ways to get there. We hopped onto Rapid Penang Bus No. 204 right near Penang Times Square, sat back as the scenery shifted from urban shoplots to lush green hills, and got down directly at the Stesen Bukit Bendera bus stop at the foot of the hill.
Ascending via the Funicular Railway
Arriving at the Lower Station, you head straight for the ticket counters. It is worth noting that ticket prices vary depending on whether you are a Malaysian citizen, hold a long-term resident pass, or are visiting as an international tourist. Once sorted, you board the iconic steep funicular train.
The ride from below to above is an experience in itself. As the red-and-white train climbs the steep tracks at a thrilling angle, the city sounds fade away, replaced by the rushing sound of jungle foliage and a noticeable drop in temperature.
Bus 204 runs regularly between the jetty, George Town center, and Penang Hill. Just have your exact change or card ready for a smooth ride to the Lower Station.
Refreshing Mountain Air & Telescope Panoramas
Stepping off the train at the summit, the first thing that hits you is the weather. The sudden, crisp cool air is an instant relief from the tropical heat down below.
Walking out to the main viewing platforms, the entire island of Penang opens up before your eyes. On a clear afternoon, you can trace the outline of George Town, the bridges stretching across to the mainland, and the blue expanse of the sea. Dropping a few coins into the heavy-duty public telescopes brings the distant streets, ships, and hillsides into astonishingly sharp focus.
Fascinating Painters and Live Street Musicians
As we wandered along the shaded pathways at the top ridge, the vibrant creative pulse of Penang caught our attention. It was genuinely fascinating to watch local painters set up their easels, capturing the play of light over the valley with swift, expressive strokes of paint.
Nearby, a street musician was playing a melodic tune that echoed softly against the mountain backdrop. Hearing live music drift through the cool mountain mist added a wonderful, soulful layer to the whole afternoon stroll.
Finding Deep Tranquility at the Hilltop Mosque
One of the most memorable parts of the afternoon was discovering the quiet mosque nestled on Penang Hill. Stepping into its serene compound offered an overwhelming sense of peace.
Away from the bustling tourist spots, sitting quietly in the gentle breeze while looking out over the quiet forested slopes brought a profound sense of mental tranquility. It is a deeply spiritual, calming space that grounds the entire visit.
Light Snacks & Exploring the Ridge on Foot
No hill trip is complete without pausing for a light snack. We grabbed some local treats and hot drinks from one of the hilltop stalls, savoring the flavors while soaking in the scenery.
While a fleet of electric golf carts is readily available at the summit to shuttle visitors around the top ridge, we much preferred walking around on foot. Going at our own pace allowed us to explore hidden corners and viewpoints at leisure. That said, the electric buggies are a fantastic, convenient option if you are traveling with senior citizens who want to skip the steeper slopes.
Bring a light jacket or cardigan. Once the sun starts heading lower toward evening, the temperature on the hill drops even further!
