We didn’t really follow a rigid tour guide map—we just picked a direction, started walking, and let the old pastel shophouses, street art, and incredible food smells guide us.

The atmosphere inside and around the grounds is so peaceful. It’s an architectural masterpiece that dates back to the 19th century, built by early Indian Muslim traders. Just a short walk away, we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by a burst of brilliant colors at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple—Penang’s oldest Hindu temple.
You can spot it from down the street because of its wonderfully intricate entrance tower (the *gopuram*) packed with hundreds of wonderfully sculpted deities and mythological figures painted in vivid, joyful shades of red, blue, and gold. Stepping closer, the air carries a faint, comforting scent of jasmine flower garlands and burning incense. It’s lively, deeply spiritual, and an absolute feast for the eyes.
3. Wandering Down Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street)
If you ask me what my favorite single lane in George Town was, I’d tell you it’s Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street) without skipping a beat. This place has so much character!
We spent ages just strolling down the narrow historic lane. It’s packed with quirky independent boutiques, old clan houses, and traditional tradesmen shops. This is also where you’ll run into some of Penang’s most famous street art murals—like the beloved painting of the two kids on a bicycle. We had so much fun queueing up for a quick photo with it before ducking into a tiny artisan shop to look at handmade souvenirs.
